Powerful Secrets

By admin | May 16, 2008

The secrets we hide have enormous power in our life. How many of our addictive/compulsive behaviors have been hidden or covered up? When we admit the nature of our addictions to another person, we are amazed at the way the addiction loses its power as it is exposed. The power of hidden behaviors and secrets can work for us as well as against us.

The psalmist wrote this prayer to God: I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you” (Psalm 119:11). If we “hide” God’s Word in our heart by memorizing and meditating on it, we will find new power to keep our mind and heart clean.

The power of secrets will also work to our advantage in our prayer life. Jesus taught us that “when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you” (Matthew 6:6). When we begin to spend time shut away with God in prayer and meditation, we’ll find that power working for us.

Recurrent Sins

By admin | April 23, 2008

We may feel awkward about bringing our recurrent sins before God. We may be embarrassed by the number of times we have had to deal with the same issues—issues that stubbornly refuse to be washed away. We may imagine that God is collecting a long list of repeated offenses to be used against us.

The apostle John wrote: “If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. But if we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his Word has no place in our hearts” (1 John 1:8-10).

To confess means to agree with God that what He declares to be wrong really is wrong. This means we need to recognize our wrongs when they occur. John says that God will forgive us and cleanse us of every wrong. Each time we confess a sin it is washed away. Our life is like a slate that has been wiped clean. Our sins are not recorded on some celestial list; they are gone forever! Even when we make the same mistakes over and over again, God keeps forgiving us if we are truly repentant. Some areas of our life need more cleaning than others! God doesn’t get angry when we come back to Him repeatedly. There is no need to feel awkward. God wants us to come to Him every time we sin.

Need A Lift?

RECHARGE

hands

It is important for us to grasp the truth that there is no shame in neediness. For those of us who were raised to appear strong, neediness is a horrible condition from which we turn away. We don’t mind giving generously or acting with compassion toward those who are needy around us, but we don’t let ourselves get to the place where we must receive help from others. This fear of unmet needs can drive us to acquire, achieve and accumulate symbols of satisfaction…

These symbols of satisfaction, while holding at bay our gnawing sense of insecurity and self-doubt, also can cloud our view of what is important. They may also inhibit our pursuing the very things we need most in life: relationships in which we are known intimately, in which we share vulnerably, and in which we discover love and accountability.

— John F. Westfall

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2
